The Sanskrit sutra verse "Sthira-Sukham Asanam" from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, holds within it a way toward a deeper understanding of the true essence of asana practice. The sutra refers to maintaining stability and ease in a seated posture for meditation, however, it can be applied to the totality of modern asana practice as well as how we fulfill a yogic way of life.

"Sthira" relates to being grounded, and having intent and courage, while "Sukham" relates to ease or comfort, but also joy and delight. Asana, simply put, means posture, or pose but the more literal translation is closer to abiding, sitting, or dwelling. When we combine these three elements, we can start to grasp the essence of Sthira-Sukham Asanam.

The verse points to the significance of right intent and fortitude in finding a calm, abiding stability in meditative awareness. If we can maintain the right intent throughout our practice, this will foster both fortitude and joy. With fortitude, we can accept challenges on the path as transient and not be swayed by passing difficulties. As it applies to our yoga journey, we can consciously cultivate these qualities within our body and mind through balanced living, and dedicated practice.

Sthira-Sukham Asanam is a harmonious union of effort and surrender. The concept of Sthira-Sukham Asanam reminds us to be grounded in right intent and to apply courage and fortitude in our approach to living. This is part of the yogic path. With the cultivation of these qualities - joy, strength, and stability will surely overflow into our daily lives, asana, and inner yoga practices.
