Welcoming Vasant Ritu | The Season of Blossoming and Renewal

Luminecta Studio | MAR 15, 2024

The first day of spring (the vernal equinox) begins on March 19! This is the season of Vasant Ritu, of blossoming, replenishment, and renewal in both ayurveda and yoga. This is the perfect time for new beginnings, new routines, and conscious transformations. As nature awakens from its winter slumber, we are invited to embrace change and harness the energy of growth and vitality that comes with the arrival of spring.

Embracing the change of Vasant Ritu involves tuning into the rhythms of nature and aligning with the seasonal shifts. In Santa Fe, it is the time of wind! The winds are picking up, blowing the small seedlings or newly emerged spring plants. When plants are pushed by the wind, they release a hormone called an “auxin.” This hormone stimulates both growth and strength in the young plants. Other plants use the wind to create seeds. The wind is an essential and beautiful force of nature. Spending time outdoors, connecting with the blooming flowers and budding trees as they begin to arrive, and cultivating a sense of gratitude for the beauty of spring can help us to embrace the change and experience a sense of renewal and vitality.

Asana practice can be a wonderful tool for embracing the change of Vasant Ritu and connecting with the transformative energy of the season. Practices that focus on opening the heart and lungs can help release stagnation and welcome in fresh prana, or life force energy. Sun salutations, which honor the rising sun and symbolize new beginnings, are particularly beneficial during this time.
